U NDISCOVERED P ORTUGAL IN S TYLE Join us on this tour to Portugal as we set out to deliver rail and culture with a combination of trains, historic towns and sights, beautiful scenery, and excellent hotels. We begin in the Templar town of Tomar and visit the UNESCO listed Convento do Cristo and the nearby National Railway Museum. Our tour continues as we move to the Roman town of Évora where we visit Beja and the hilltop village of Monsaraz. DAY 1

DAY 5 This morning, we travel by rail to the regional town of Beja which was strategically built on top of a hill. First, we go to Beja Pousada for lunch, then some free time to explore the historic town, including its castle and attractive centre, before returning to the station for our train back to Evora. (B,L) DAY 6 We explore Evora today with our local guide. Sights include the Roman Temple of Diana, the university, the cathedral, the chapel of bones and the aqueduct. A free afternoon to continue exploring the town, or even enjoy the hotel’s facilities! (B) DAY 7 Today, we will travel by coach to the fascinating hilltop border fortified village of Monsaraz. Here, we will have a short, guided tour with a local guide followed by free time to explore this historic hilltop village, with views over the Alqueva Dam and into Spain. Farewell lunch in a local restaurant. (B,L) DAY 8 This morning, we catch a train to Lisbon Oriente from where we take the metro to the airport. (B) This tour is operated by our friends at PTG Tours in conjunction with Railtrail.

We will be offering both flight and rail options for travelling to Tomar. After flying into Lisbon, you will take a train directly to Tomar. If you are travelling overland from the UK, you will not need to go via Lisbon. DAY 2 This morning, we will meet our local guide who will lead us in a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Convento de Cristo. Afterwards, we have an afternoon at leisure to explore or visit the National Railway Museum ahead of our Welcome Dinner this evening. (B,D) DAY 3 A rail trip on one of Portugal’s most under-rated scenic railway lines, the Beira Baixa, is in store today. We journey along the beautiful River Tagus with sections rivalling that of the Douro Valley and we pass the “Gates of Rodao” on our way to Castelo Branco. Here, we have free time for lunch and to explore this medieval town before returning to Tomar for an evening at leisure. (B) DAY 4 Today, we travel by rail to Elvas, one of Portugal’s hidden gems, surrounded by a defensive wall in the formation of a unique star arrangement. We have a free afternoon to explore this town including the impressive aqueduct before boarding our coach to transfer to Evora, our home for the next four nights. Dinner in the hotel tonight. (B,D)
