The mighty River Tyne is bordered by the un-spoilt beauty, history and heritage of Northumberland & Durham. This attraction packed short break time-travels from the Romans of Hadrians Wall and Vindolanda, through historic Anglo-Saxon Bamburgh, to the Victorian ‘living history’ of Beamish. whilst your seven bridges tour on the Tyne brings you from Victoria to the Millennium.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

DAY 1 Customers booking our rail inclusive package travel by train to Newcastle where it is a short walk to our hotel, The Copthorne Hotel. After an early-afternoon meeting with the tour manager, we take a Cruise along the Tyne , that takes us under seven of Newcastle’s famous bridges and gives great views of the mix of traditional and modern architecture dotted along the banks. (D) DAY 2 Today, we visit Beamish, The Living Museum of the North , an incredible experience through time. A living, working experience, featuring a recreated town including an Edwardian bakery, a coal mine, a local pub and school amongst other things, all linked together by a historic tram system. On our return to Newcastle, we make a visit to The Angel of the North for a quick photo-stop. DAY 3 Heading inland today, we travel alongside Hadrians Wall to Vindolanda , one of Europe’s most important Roman archaeological sites. As well as having the chance to view thousands of extraordinary Roman artefacts, we also get to watch live excavations. From here, we are transported to the South Tynedale Railway for a steam* journey through the stunning North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on England’s highest narrow gauge railway. (B,D) DAY 4 Leaving Newcastle, today we travel north to Bamburgh for a visit to Bamburgh Castle – once home to the Kings of Northumbria. Standing proudly on the edge of the North Sea, the castle has lots to explore from over 1,400 years of history. After free time in the town of Bamburgh, we travel to Heatherslaw Light Railway for a return steam* journey along the banks of the river Till. (B,D) DAY 5 After breakfast it’s time to bid farewell to Newcastle and return by train to homeward destinations. (B) *we reserve the right to travel by heritage diesel train should the steam locomotive not be available/ timetabled at the time of our visit.
