V INTAGE P ORT Join us on a unique holiday to the stunning Douro Valley Port Wine area of northern Portugal, the world’s first demarcated wine region, to discover a world of steeply terraced vineyards producing fine wines and ports. The only way to see this beautiful region is by rail and river and this tour is centrally based and includes several scenic rail trips and river cruises.
⭐ Two Port wine estates ⭐ One Vinho Verde estate ⭐ Two river cruises ⭐ Vintage train ride ⭐ Prehistoric Rock Art visit
DAY 1 We have flights from Bristol, Gatwick, and Manchester to Porto, from where we transfer to Regua, our home for the next five nights. Dinner in the hotel is included tonight. (D) DAY 2 In the morning, we catch the regional train for a superb scenic journey along the river to the railway’s terminus at Pocinho. From here, we visit the UNESCO World Heritage Archaeological Park and Museum plus one of the prehistoric rock art sites, travelling in an all-terrain vehicle with an easy walk for the last 600m. We end this exciting day with a short trip across the river to Quinta da Pacheca where we will have a fine dinner and the opportunity to taste their wine and port. (B,D) DAY 3 This morning, our coach takes us to Casa de Mateus, famous as the palace that appears on the labels of Mateus Rose wine, for a guided tour of the house and gardens. This afternoon, we join the Douro Historic Train, a restored vintage train, travelling through breathtaking scenery of terrace vineyards and olive trees, to the riverside station at Tua and return. We end the day with dinner in a popular local restaurant. (B,D) DAY 4 We return to Pocinho this morning for the first of our two River Douro cruises. We sail along a stunning part of the valley with steep terraced vineyards and dramatic rock cliffs and is probably the most beautiful stretch of the river. A full three course lunch with wine is served on board. (B,L) DAY 5 This morning, we visit the pretty riverside town of Amarante, one of the gems of northern Portugal, with time to visit the Monastery after our walk through the town. Afterwards, we continue to the
vineyards at Quinta da Aveleda for a guided walk through their beautiful gardens before an excellent 3-course lunch and a chance to taste some of their popular wines. (B,L) DAY 6 This morning, we visit Lamego, an attractive town with Renaissance and Baroque mansions overlooked by two hills. After walking the marvellous granite staircase and exploring, we continue our day with lunch at Quinta da Casa Amarela, including their own wines and port. We return to Regua for an evening at leisure. (B,L) DAY 7 Another of the highlights of the holiday, we sail down the River Douro to Porto passing through two spectacular dams and under a series of bridges including the iconic Maria Pia railway bridge. A full three course lunch with wine is served on board. Our coach will have collected our luggage in Regua and will be waiting to take us to our airport hotel. (B,L) DAY 8 Short walk to the airport for return flights to the UK. (B) This tour is operated by our friends at PTG Tours in conjunction with Railtrail.
