A wonderful Austrian summer rail holiday exploring the floral villages, glacial lakes, and imposing mountains of Tyrol. The tour includes three great steam train journeys on the Zillertalbahn, Achenseebahn and Pinzgauer Railway, plus a relaxing boat trip on Lake Achen and visit to the famous Krimml Waterfalls.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

DAY 1 We depart London St Pancras by Eurostar to Brussels, where we change onto a high-speed train into Germany. Our hotel for one night is the InterCity Hotel in historic Nuremberg . (D) DAY 2 After breakfast we visit Germany’s National Rail Museum in Nuremberg, the oldest railway museum in the world before enjoying the scenic rail journey south through Bavaria and into beautiful Austria for our five night stay at the Hotel Briem in the village of Westendorf . (B,D) DAY 3 Today is a free day to relax and explore the local area or venture further afield using your Brixental guest card . The card can be used for free travel on the entire bus and train network in the region and also offers discounts at attractions. Our experienced tour manager can advise on the many delightful options available including Kitzbühel, Kirchberg, and St. Johann in Tirol. (B,D) DAY 4 We travel from our base in Westerdorf by rail to Jenbach and then continue by steam train to Mayrhofen on the Zillertalbahn which takes us through the stunning scenery of the Zillertal Valley. resort. Following our visit, we take the return back to Jenbach by rail and retrace our steps to Westendorf. (B,D) DAY 5 This morning we travel by rail to Jenbach and board the Achenseebahn , Europe’s oldest cog railway , dating from 1889 and is still steam operated. Puffing through the steeper sections, it rises to a 16% gradient from Jenbach to Seespitz and from here we enjoy a boat trip on the Tyrol’s largest lake to the resort town of Pertisau . We enjoy time at leisure for lunch before we continue our cruise from Pertisau to Scholastika on the northern shores of lovely Lake Achensee. We travel by boat back to Seespitz where we board the Achenseebahn for our return downhill journey by steam to Jenbach and continue by rail from Jenbach to our hotel. (B,D) DAY 6 Our next steam adventure sees us on a Railtrail favourite, the Pinzgauer Railway . We board our steam train at the classic Tyrolean market town of Zell am See and travel onwards past the Pinzgauer Grasberge mountains and Salzach Valley to Krimml. We continue by coach to the spectacular Krimml Waterfalls , Austria’s highest falls with a total height of 380 metres and view this famous waterfall up close before we head back to Westendorf by rail from Krimml. (B,D) DAY 7 We bid farewell to Westendorf and Austria this morning and take the rail journey north into Germany
