Inlandsbanan, Arctic Circle & Jokkmokk Winter Fair

If we had just one word to describe this tour, it could only be “unique”. The Inlandsbanan is a fabulous tourist line through Sweden’s wilderness to another world beyond the Arctic Circle. We have 20 seats booked on its one and only winter trip! The journey’s purpose is to visit Jokkmokk Winter Fair, a 400 year old Sami festival in a village just north of the Arctic Circle. On our Inlandsbanan winter adventure we will eat lunch at the Ice Hotel, stop at the Arctic Circle, meet reindeer, explore Sami culture and maybe even see the Northern Lights! Add in Oslo, the Dovrebanen to Trondheim and Stockholm for a unique winter adventure!

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

DAY 1 We depart London Heathrow Airport on board our British Airways flight to Oslo. On arrival we take the train to Oslo Sentral Station and transfer to our hotel for two nights, the Thon Hotel Europa. (D) DAY 2 A guided tour of Oslo introduces you to the main sights of Norway’s capital city and seat of its Royal Family, before an afternoon at leisure to explore independently. (B,D) DAY 3-4 Departing Oslo, we head northwards on the Dovrebanen Railway, an epic wintry ★ ★ Become acquainted with Sami culture at the Swedish Mountain & Sami Museum ★ ★ Enjoy a whole day at Jokkmokk Winter Market ★ ★ Tour Stockholm, Scandinavia’s most attractive capital city ★ ★ Visit Oslo, Norway’s political, cultural and royal capital ★ ★ Enjoy majestic scenery on the Dovrebanen between Oslo and Trondheim ★ ★ Explore Trondheim, Norway’s religious capital, with its stunning cathedral ★ ★ Cross from Norway into Sweden on the Meråker & Mittbanan Railways ★ ★ Stay in Östersund, Sweden’s “Winter City” ★ ★ Fantastic wintry journey on the Inlandsbanan beyond the Arctic Circle ★ ★ Take lunch overlooking snow covered Lake Volgsjön ★ ★ Spend four nights in your own spacious chalet (normally sleeping 6 people, but we have booked double occupancy) ★ ★ Guided tour and lunch at the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi

DAY 5 Heading eastwards from Trondheim on the Maråkerbanen, we follow the coastline of Trondheim Fjord, before heading inland to the village of Hell and towards the Swedish border. At Storlien we switch from Norwegian diesel to Swedish electric, continuing on the Mittbanan Railway to Östersund, known as the “Winter City”, where we spend one night at the Clarion Hotel Grand. Our journey also takes in the Gubrandsdalen National Park and the Dovrefjell mountain range, before arriving in Trondheim for two nights at the Thon Hotel Nidaros. Day 4 is at leisure to discover Trondheim, Norway’s religious capital with the stunning Nidaros Cathedral. (B,D)
